Try a TA2024 or TA2020 amp from eBay. $12 and up. It doesn't seem like much power, but that's on a par with what most "high powered" car head units put out when tested honestly. The amp boards are pretty much ready to go... some even throw in RCA cables and binding posts.
I'd suggest going for one that includes a clipping or overload LED; the Tripath chips conveniently have an output pin for that, but very few of the boards bother to implement what I think is a vital feature. One amp that does is listed on eBay under "New MKIII Tripath TA2020".
Real car amps won't be as efficient or as small, but they would offer a lot more power. Judging by a couple of amps I've measured, the no-signal or quiescent current drain is only a couple of hundred mA even with a conventional class AB amp capable of several hundred watts RMS. So they shouldn't instantly flatten a small battery (like the common 12V 7AH sealed lead acid battery).
