A friend of mine has an all-mbl system, 101E with 2 of big power amps, monostrapped for each channel. He also had the same preamp of this review. I heard the system before and after: the mbl preamp got replaced by a tube preamp that included a low output MC phono section for **half** the money. The system sounded instantly better- free of that brightness I have always associated with mbl at shows and at my friend's house before the new preamp came in.
The new tube preamp was fully balanced, so it was a simple swap. IMO the mbl speakers and the amps are quite good, but their preamp is a weak link in the chain- bright, stilted, it really does not allow one to turn up the volume to realistic levels without pain.
