fidelity,
I have heard but not used the Audio Research D240 myself. It seems similar in nature to my solid state ARC amplifier, the D130- which I think of as very similar to the D240 and really like- amazingly neutral and cool running. In my view, the D240 is one of the best ARC solid state amplifiers: the 100.2, D130, D200/300/400 and the D240 are my favourites.
It's been awhile since I heard a D240, and don't know that I an comment on a MKII as compared to MKI, but I remember the D240 as smooth and nimble and quite neutral. Given your "slow and relaxing" concept, I'd be curious as to the other gear you're using with it- I thought it was quite fast and dynamic- pleasantly so.
As for the fuse rating and alternatives, my suggestion is to ring up Leonard in Audio Research service to get the rating and at the same time, if you don't have one, order a manual quoting the serial number to have the right version. I think the manuals are still about $10.
I've been curious about audiophile fuses but have never experimented with them.
Power cords are another realm in which I'm not well-versed. My only venture has been to buy an Audioquest NRG-2 off Ebay for a Cambridge Audio 640C CD player- with impressive improvements. You might like to try the Oyaide plug, but in the meantime, try cleaning up the plug prongs with fine steel wool to remove the oxidation. In the last few days I've re-assmebled my SP10 > D115 system after a long storage and all the plugs were dull and oxidized, needing the steel wool treatment. I know some people have IEC sockets installed on their ARC gear to be able to use various audiophile cords- I've not been inclined so far to do this.
Cheers,
Bambi B
