If I wanted to give manufacturers the benefit of the doubt, I would suggest that one centralized power conditioning unit makes more sense than extensive power conditioning in each component.
In fact, I wonder if centralized power supplies for all the separate components wouldn't likewise be more efficient, although such a unit would not be optional to the system, as power conditioners are.
This is somewhat like the consumer confusing issue of which digital cameras build stabilization into each individual lens as opposed to into the digital camera body itself....
