Perhaps into the low impedance load of the Apogees the power supply sagged, causing high frequency roll off ?I have some Klipsch CF 4 speakers, a 4 ohm load.
With a small Parasound HCA 500, a 50 WPC amp, they sound "mellow".Yet, the Parasound is not really a mellow amp on my 801's.
What is happening on the Klipsch CF 4's is power supply sag, hence a dull sound, until clipping.
The Onkyo 504 even made Vandersteens sound etched, not an easy thing to do!
Did you try the 504 on anything but the Apogees ?
I have had several Krell amps, and I found many to be rather bright, but all had tremendous bass.
I think the old Krell KSA 50 was the best sounding Krell amp I ever owned.
I had a KSA 200, it was almost unlistenable on the 801's, not hard sounding, just super bright, to the point of being unmusical.
I sold it to a guy using it with old Magneapn MG 2's, and he is in heaven!
He has had the Krell for 5 years, and loves it.
He lives up in Vermont, I live in Florida.
The big Krell made the room to hot, and dried my skin out, LOL
