I have always found that the amplifier was more the reason for the degree of unraveling of the complexity of the source material, as well as, to a lesser degree the other front-end equipment (including cabling). I even noticed this quality with my old MG-1Bs, especially with tube amps versus the mid-fi solid state amps. I would blame the Maggies only to find that amp/speaker matching to be the critical element. The Maggies remain at the top, in my experience, when it comes to allowing the user to discern nuances between different components. Mine you, I have only heard the Gallos in a very brief session and I don't remember any impressions one way or another. Thus, I am not in a position to deny the comparison you state you heard. I have, though, experienced setups where I thought I had pinned down limitations of the Maggies only to find that the limitations I had attributed to the speaker were indeed caused by other factors.
