another reason to fill them is to stop the ringing. the square stock used for the struts will give you a resonance at the frequency of the two side's dimensions. i had this on some gym equipment that was a little too close to my chair. while doing the "clap test" for slap echo i could hear the square stock ring for a second after the rest of the poorly treated room decayed. i think a future upgrade for grant would be to use rectangular stock for the struts as i think 2 different side dimmensions wouldn't resonate. filling them fixes it fine (still picking up bird shot) but i think this would not cost much more if built into the design.
