Lars, I haven't noticed any difference in sound from the extra 2" height. Sorry about the high cost of shipping to your location. Soapstone is a really nice material, I love the way it looks and feels, but isn't it rather brittle? I suggest that you have a steel plate, maybe 1/4"-1/2" smaller than the base, made up to attach to the bottom. It wouldn't need to be very thick to relieve the stress & add support to the soapstone. If made only slightly smaller than the base, the plate should be invisible once everything is set up. Best of luck on your project.
