Patrick -Whether you use diffusion or absorption depends on which sounds best in your particular room.
In my room I prefer diffusion,, so I use fake ficus trees. There's nothing magic about fake ficus; that's just what happened to have plenty leaves and adequate height for the Sound Labs.
A single Sonex panel (the thicker the better) behind the Quads would probably be plenty of absorption, if you decided to go that route.
If the tonal balance in your room is a little on the bright side, then absorption may be called for. IF the tonal balance is pleasant or a little on the warm side, then diffusion will probably work better. You can check the "voicing" of a room by walking from room to room in your house, talking out loud. Listen to the tonal quality of your voice - it will change significantly from room to room. The reason to do this in several rooms is to get a feel for how different rooms sound. Also, clap your hands and see if you get a "ringgggg" - if so, you have large parallel reflective surfaces that are giving you slap echo, which can be quite fatiguing. You'll need to treat one of those surfaces.
Best of luck to you!
