All my Maggies have been unmodified. The 3.5 is superior to the 2.5.
3.5 is a 3way hybrid compared with the 2.5 2 way. Much of the soundstage distortion of the 2.5 appears to be caused by using a cut down ribbon, the ribbon doesn't run the length of the speaker, and the rather curious frequency balnce chosen by the designer.Use of an additional midrange section seems to have made for a better balanced speaker, there is less of a gap between the ribbon and planars, but the 3.5 still shows some of the old Maggie
charcteristics like the need for immense power and highish listening levels. The ribbon still dominates the sound. The 3.5 might have a bit more bass and that great ribbon but for me the 1.6 is the better balanced speaker, it is more cohesive and neutral.
My money is on the newer 1.6 but if you can find el cheapo 3.5's you may not be able to resist that amazing ribbon, it makes the 3.5.
