Re: MG1.6 or MG2.7??

I've also owned both 1.6 and 2.5R, as well as most of the medium sized Maggies over the past 20+ years.

Yes, the true ribbon is an amazing HF transducer but the 2.5 was one of the most unbalanced designs ever by Magnepan.

The highly skewed frequency response polarised listeners into love it or hate it camps. I kinda loved it enough to own a pair for 3 years.

There was also a midrange suckout which gave prominence to the ribbon.
Add in the old Maggie bugaboo of needing heaps of power, the characteristic murky midrange plus major distortions in the soundstage and it's clear that this was not a great Maggie. Rather it was a highly idiosyncratic page in the Maggie history books.

At the time if you realy wanted to experience the Maggie ribbon, the larger MG-III was a better way to do it.

In contrast the new 1.6 has none of these faults.
It is a supremely coherent speaker, capable of life sized imaging and a realistic soundstage.

Compared with the 2.5R, all the 1.6 lacks is that extra bit of top end extension. Overall that is a more than fair trade-off for that cohesiveness.

Bottom line is that the new 1.6 is a much better balanced and neutral speaker than any previous Maggie. A great value for money product.
