RE: "the main panels require delay" ...

Hey mate,

Yes, I also read somewhere (a long time ago) that "subwoofers have additional delay" - but this is not true ... at least, it's not true if you also use a HP filter to roll off the mains. Then - you have a standard 'XO'.

I can only think that this mistaken idea came about some time ago - when people didn't tend to roll-off the mains ... they merely augmented the mains' bass response with subs (ie. just used a LP filter on the subs).

You can easily use REW to prove to yourself that the only delay that's required is to compensate for the different distance to your ears from the subs and the mains:
* if the subs are further away from your ears than the mains (as in my case) ... you apply delay to the mains.
* but if the subs are nearer than the mains ... you apply delay to the subs.
