The LRS' are back in the listening room, and the Celestion 5's to the new TV room.It was fun using the Celestion 5's for a couple weeks. They performed as described.
But to finish up. Firstly, it's a 6 1/2 inch mid wood, not a 5 inch. I assumed 5 because .. Celestion 5.
Secondly, Cones and boxes. How can you overcome their basic and predictable colorations? The Magnepan simply is not plagued by driver crossover problems, cone breakup, and the admirable but hardly transparent metal dome tweeter. Box resonances are so noticeable when you are used to not hearing them, and you *know* the volume level you are using does not excite any resonance sounds on the LRS's.
I still like monitors and for under 200 bucks this very nicely preserved pair of Celestion 5's are perfect hotel room stay speakers, or dorm -- anywhere low volume is going to be your watchword. Plenty of beauty in them.
The closing question I have is, just how much can the limits of a monitor be ameliorated? I spent 200 bucks.
If I spent 2,000 today, or 5,000 I don't see how the basic problems of a 2-way-in-a-box are solved to the degree they offer serious audiophile competition to the entry level Magnepan.
Back to the grind. Tschaikovsky Mozartiana orchestral suite.
