Wow, yeah. I thought the weak midrange problem was isolated to T-IV's and that this might be the reason. I'm wondering the same about the previous owner because these IV's I bought from a lady on CL said they belonged to her father who had passed away, and they were his beloved Magnepan Tympanis, purchased new in the mid 1980's. It's too bad he never got to hear them playing at their full potential! I got them just before they were headed to e-waste they were sitting outside of a travel trailer under a market umbrella in the rain. At least she wasn't intent on s-canning them like a widow with low WAF of them might be.
What's even more strange is that I also have a set of Carver Amazings w/60" ribbons that had a factory crossover flaw, and the bass drivers were being driven at about 10% of their output. So the owner of those never heard them play correctly either. Makes you wonder how many sets of speakers are out there with problems like this...
