QUAD never gave a maximum SPL recommendation. What QUAD did clearly specify is the maximum AC voltage input which is 33V.
The 88dB claim is probably left over from the olden days. Back when people didn't bother to read the manual back when people were using completely inappropriate amplifiers to drive the speakers and experienced the inevitable arcing and thus the myth they don't play loud was born.
Even back then if one was using say a QUAD II amp, 15 watts, with a rated efficiency of 86dB they would hit 95dB or so before the amp would clip. That is plenty loud real loud in fact.
That was back then and that has nothing to do with now. Install protection boards. Cheap and easy to install. And make them boogey! I've used 300 watt tube mono blocs in the past, drove them to 100dB+ levels. I'm not the least bit concerned with damage, arcing, it isn't going to happen.
