I always laugh when I hear the question posed by some audiophiles what is the most important aspect for quality sound? You hear all kinds of answers. The preamp, the cables, etc. rarely is the correct answer given. It seems obvious to me that the most important aspect is the speaker and the speaker room interface. Yes all the other things in the chain have an impact for sure but the speakers and the room are the overwhelmingly dominate part of the system. If one does not get this right it really doesn't matter how much time and money one invests in the other parts of the chain they are saddled with lack luster performance from either the speaker or the room or the setup in the room. Or a combination of all three.
One of just many great things about the ESL-63 is Walker understood this fundamental problem and designed the speakers to work pretty much uniformly in just about any room. The key was not only flat on-axis response but smooth off-axis response having a very controlled directivity index or what some call the power response. Many speakers with flat on-axis response have very poor behavior off axis the reason they sound great in some rooms and not so great in other rooms.
I have set-up the 63 in all sorts of rooms over the years and I am always amazed how similar they sound to my set-up at home regardless of the given room.
