Lots of variables, but, no, three-ways are not "better" in general, for the things most important to me.
(The Maggie 3.7 xover points are especially bothersome - one at 700Hz - ew.)
I've owned everything from single-driver backhorns (Lamhorn, Beauhorn, Rethm, Cain & Cain, more), conventional boxes (up to big Wilsons), high-eff middle-ground (Audio Note AN/E, Living Voice), front horns including Avantgarde Trio and Cogent field coils, Maggie LRS, 1.7, 3.7, Quad 53, 63, 988, 2905... well, everything. Twice.
For the most part the one-ways do it best for me. The Quad 63 is the only one-way I know of that has both very good freq response and time domain response (of course, it's absolutely unbeatable in that category).
No one-way will do it in a big room, though, of course, so I actively cross these Quads - listened semi-nearfield at 8', far away from any wall - to dual 15" sealed subs with external 950W amps.
This system could be said to do everything - but then the Quads alone with no xover in the mix do certain things, like solo flute or female vocals, a bit better still. (Nothing does everything, perfectly, in this hobby.)
At Axpona this past weekend the rooms that wowed me were either extremely expensive or running Maggies (LRS+) or electrstats (Martin Logan). When I got home and spun my system I realized I had heard nothing there I would take over it.
So I've had Maggies before but not listened to them nearfield and not actively crossed. I like to experiment, and I'd like to have a backup for the Quads, so I have a pair of .7s on the way. Will report findings.
