MC1 rebuild with Foil

I use the MC1 as side surrounds, and since I use Dirac Live room correction I do a lot of measuring. A couple years ago the low end response of both speakers changed. It used to go down to the 80Hz spec and at some point it started rolling off around 125Hz. Don't know why. This required me to push the crossover to bass management up as high as 120.

In December I contacted Magnepan and talked with Mick about the issue and sent the MC1's for evaluation. He saw the effect but could not pin it down to a specific cause ... not a crossover component or anything like that.

So he offered a possible solution and upgrade and I went for it: reduce the impedance to 3.3ohms and redo the midrange with foil instead of wire.

They arrived yesterday and I'm still evaluating but the basic result is I'm now able to put the crossover back down to 80Hz. They don't respond completely the same as new but definitely better than before. As for sound, it's hard to evaluate a surround speaker but so far it integrates perfectly with the rest of the system and I hear no negative issues.

It's really the only option to keep an all-Maggie surround system since I don't have room for floor speakers on the sides ... but I may still go ahead and hang my LRS's in place of the MC1's. ;-)
