RE: Quad 988 Fading In And Out

You will need to remove the grille cloth and safety screens so you can closely look at the panels. And to do that you have to remove the base assembly first. Arghhh! Quad just keeps making these speakers more difficult to service. It was a snap with the 63 to get the safety screens out quickly.

Once you have the grille cloth, screens removed you will need to have it in a dark room. Apply signal to the speaker until the output starts to drop. Keep it at the level. Carefully look at the panels and you will most likely see one or more panels that have some micro sparking or glowing inside the panel.

Sometimes it's more than one but the leakage is so bad it only manifests itself in one panel. But then you replace that panel and find another one is leaking too much. If the offending panel is one of the upper/lower bass panels that is causing the problem remove it from the circuit by removing the jumper clips connecting the panel. Removing the bias wire won't completely remove it from the signal path you have to remove the jumpers. Then apply signal again and see if another panels is causing problems.

DO NOT touch anything while an amplifier is hooked up to the speakers the voltages are lethal.
