When the protection circuit engages there is a significant drop in output and what output is there is distorted.

If the protection circuit is not engaging but you experience a drop in output, everything shifts towards the other speaker, then the output returns to normal there is a panel that is leaking too much under heavy drive. The excess leakage loads the supply down too much and a loss of efficiency is the result.

This type of problem is resolved by determining the offending panel and replacing.
