I suggest the "other problems" are associated with the electronic HP filter in the sub not being of a very good (sonic) quality.However, you could buy a 2-way active XO and use it to:
1. roll off the mains, and
2. roll off the subs (disabling the sub's roll-off ... or setting it to its highest frequency).Some people will say this should be an analogue active XO; I would've agreed with this - until I went to a digital XO (from miniDSP - the 2x4HD would suit your purposes).
What a digital XO gives you (as well as the filters) is the ability to implement:
1. delay, to time-align the mains with the subs (since they will be at different distances from your ears).
2. and some room correction for the bass frequencies.Andy
