I have tried it several times in different rooms over the years. It never worked so well that I kept it, but it was certainly acceptable. If memory serves I was able to get good imaging as long as the dimensions were all exactly proportional.
Currently running mine about seven feet from FW with DWMs, tweets out with tweeters about 80% of the distance from each other as my ears. Slight toe in. Sounds great, especially with a sub added in. I actually have three other pairs of speakers that I substitute in for a change of pace. The Maggies are by far my favorite.
