Although long ago I spent a lot of time on several occasions listening to a friend's full range Apogee I only remember not have been 'taken' by them, (all Electrocompaniet electronics (AW 250 amp/s?)
"No experience with Apogees, but I can offer some generic advice.
First, if your only problem is SPL then biamping is probably not going to cure it. Remember if you increase the power 10x 2x, then the SPL will only go up 3 dB. I ran my MGIIIa with a total of 2 kW of active biamped power, and the volume setting on the preamp was the same as my current single amp 500 wpc + MG3.7i (power referenced at 4 ohm). Second, as others have mentioned, biwiring is a waste of wire and speaker-level biamping is a waste of wire and amplifiers."
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Magnepan manufacture a PLL crossover (XO-20) to do exactly what you suggest not doing? Also very long ago IIRC in a MG20 audition (Lyric Hi Fi) this optional XO and all Mark Levinson electronics were used.
Please tell what's the story on this?:
