I think in a large room it's not so much tweeters in/out, it's woofers in/out. If you place the tweeters where they need to be for imaging, you can then put the woofers on the inside or outside to optimize bass response.

I've measured bass response in my room (smaller 27x13x8) and getting the woofers closer to the wall while leaving the tweeters where they need to be definitely changes the resonance modes.
