my memory of the 'i' designation is a bit fuzzy but I think they offered to upgrade the original 1.7 to a 1.7i for around $400 (again-I'm going off memory which can be a bit dangerous).This led to a lot of speculation that at that price range there was probably somewhat of a 'razoring' applied to the frame; but no one's ever proven it.
