Yep, I wouldn't be in a rush to rent a space out unless finances tell you to do so.
Basements here in older houses like mine are very common, but as most people don't like them, they only happen on new builds with sloped properties.
Getting extra storage would backfire for sure, not the best plan IMO. My mom was a pack rat, my dad the opposite. My wife and I are both purgers (with extra stuff, not bulimia). My FIL however takes the cake. He has 5 acres (plus the bottom right house with all the other junk on it where his son/my BIL lives). His house is on the left of the main property, the rest is a workshop, trailers.. all filled with "stuff". And he keeps buying stuff. In vehicles alone I think he has at least 6-7; 66 Tbird, 59 hardtop vert Galaxie, Eclipse vert, Crossfire vert, 2 pickups, dune buggy, sled, trike, forklift, trail bike... We'll need some serious help when he passes this misfortune on.
