I'm guessing he used them with bare wire -- copper wire could corrode if in contact with gold or rhodium whereas if you make a tight copper-copper connection it should be OK as long as the connection remains tight.
I'm not sure about gold vs. rhodium, rhodium over silver would seem a better compromise on the copper/solder side while gold would be better on the gold-gold side . . . I'd be inclined to favor the spade lug side since the junction is exposed to moisture and salt, whereas the solder joint is airtight, but I might be missing something.
