The 3.6 actually has 2 socks on it. If you took it apart you'd find an inner covering over the driver which is a sheen but non plyable material. (in other words it is not speaker fabric) This may account for why it looks so dense to you.
I do not know why they add this layer to the larger ones, but it can be removed and I am sure it would sound more open as a result, but it might get so open it gets bright.
As noted you can vac the cloth over the main driver, I have tested this on crap maggies and it does not hurt them, (even if you stick the vac to the mylar) however as noted go nowhere near the ribbon.
