My 2 channel listening room is 11/6 x 15, and a pair of MMGs plus subs fit in there nicely.If you can have a "WAF free" zone in the second bedroom, I would try the 1.7s in there, even though it’s on the small size. Although I imagine you will need major room treatments, the freedom to place the speakers out as far as you wish will make a big difference (I have mine almost 5' from the front wall).
Go with a decent 5.1 bookshelf/box system in the livingroom that works ok up against the walls.
Then when you want to listen to music, you won't be competing with "dancing with the stars" :^)
I'm probably the odd man out here, but IMHO, small maggies can't do the dynamics that a similar sized cone speaker can do for HT. I'm using Paridigm Studio 60s, driven by pro amps in my HT. A good example, in the movie "Knowing", starring Nicolas Cage, when the airline flies over the interstate highway and crashes, everyone in the room shat their pants, including the dog!
