I gotta admit. Often the trouble, especially among quality cables, is determining if the difference is good or bad.
If other parts of the system are not capable of reproducing, say, a fine mid/high cymbal hit, then a cable that is more revealing in the highs will sound similar to a cable that masks the highs.
Once you've addressed the bulk of your systems improvements, the craziest things can make an audible difference : the TYPE of spikes under EACH piece of equipment (even wood screws !) , the sweater you're wearing, the position of your chair a few inches forward or back, the time of day, room temperature, humidity, allergies, the movement of a single tube trap...
Enough to drive you crazy. But cables often make quite a change.
