I’m using Radio Shack magnet wire in my upgraded crossover for my SMGa’s at the suggestion of Dawnrazor. Initially, I replaced some crazy expensive speaker wires ($3500 for 2M pair) with about 50 cents worth of 30ga magnet wire. I am currently using double runs and a single run to from amp to external tweeters. I ended up replacing all my internal wire in the XO to double runs of 30ga magnet wire. I’m in the process of rebuilding a pair of MG2.5 and will use Magnet wire in my XO’s as well.
I know all this sound crazy and I was not a believer but DR does come up with some great ideas and the cost of the experiment was right. You can go to any Radio Shack Catalog #: 278-1345 and get this stuff. Three rolls of 22ga, 26g, and 30ga all for about $6.00. You get 200 feet of the 30ga.
Have you taken a look to see how thin the wires that make up your Magnepan drivers are? They are very thin wires that have roughly the same diameter as magnet wire. Try it and it will be the best $6.00 you will ever spend. BTW, I ended up eliminating my binding posts and hard wired directly to the crossover. The stuff is very easy to work with but difficult to see. I ended up running the external wire in some clear plastic tubing for esthetics.
Some have had concerned regarding running a lot of power through these wires. I’ve been running a pair of 500 watt Rowland monoblocks with magnet wire for close to a year without any issues.
