Hi sbrians,AFAIK (having been sent schematics from the factory in the early 90s), there is little difference between the 3.3 and the 3.5 except for a minor change in the external XO. The drivers are the same.
I'll bet my bottom dollar the 3.5 certainly didn't use anything but the same old "el cheapo" Magnepan components but you are certainly not "missing anything" in terms of using a 3.5 external XO with the 3.3. Though whether you're actually gaining something is hard to say ... but presumably the Magnepan engineers thought so, or they wouldn't have bothered to make the change?
If you're worried about the 3.3 bass, I suggest you shouldn't waste your money redoing the external XO with better inductors etc. ... sell it on eBay and put in an active XO! :-)) The bass panel responds well to not having those big inductors "in the way" of the signal.
Regards,
Andy
