Yeah, getting good speakers usually starts to point out deficiencies in the rest of the system. First step on a slippery slope man...:)

With a budget of $1k you've really got a lot of options, both from an amp and pre-amp standpoint. And what you get will really depend on what works for you, and how you use your system. Are you setting up a dedicated 2-channel system or home theater?

If you ever have a question about the condition of the speakers, you can determine their condition by taking the socks off an inspecting the wires. If they are starting to peel up from the backing, then they will need a rebuild before long.
