No, you can dial in the autoformer to optimize the sound. I found it gave the bass a nice round sound and more lower end punch. As you increase the degree of impedance multiplication( e.g., the 3X setting will make a 4 ohm speaker look like a 12 ohm load to the amp, which is much easier to drive), there is an increased "dryness" to the sound, but you basically dial in what sounds best. When it sounds too dry, you back it down a notch. They wouldn't be a tweak if they didn't alter the sound, but I have found the change to be very positive once you spend the time to dial it in. They come with a trial period, and if you choose to buy 'em used on A'gon you can turn 'em around pretty quickly if you don't like them. Most people love them with tubes and Maggies.
