It is hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like windows are behind the speakers.

If that is so, and they can be opened without offending the neighbors too greatly, then you may be able to move the speakers back and get some of the openess and 3d imaging you are getting now, with the windows OPEN.

At least this was what my MMGs did in a similiar situation (the windows were a bit lower than your picture i think). It was the best sound in that room, even thought the speakers were 5ft out from the wall. Opening the window as much as possible was like dragging the speakers from 2 ft out to 5ft out.

Might be worth a try.
