One sonic problem with the classic side-by-side mounting is that the axis of the mid/highs is displaced a few inches to the side of the axis of the bass panel. So your proposed centering of the mid/tweeters would lead to a more coherent line source.

That said, I only notice the displaced axes when I am just a few inches from the speaker. Hmm, a new listening position: ultra-nano-nearfield.
