If you look at the amplifier's output on a scope, if it is clipping you will see the top of the waveform sliced off. This means the amp is being called upon to deliver more power than it is capable of. This in turn creates distortion which does bad things to the ribbon. You can hear the distortion through the speaker. Obviously, I'm not a tech(!) but this is what I have seen, heard and experienced.
