Lots of mods have been done to the ESL over the years. In my experience all of them are questionable at best. Most of them significantly degrade the performance of the speaker in one way or another.
The best mod one can do for their ESLs is to make sure they are working to original factory spec., correctly set-up, and driven with sufficient amplification. Not much else one can do to improve on the genuis of Peter Walker.
