Re: MGIIIa tweeter help

What I suggest you do, Bullet, is strip off their socks so you can investigate them closely - you can't see much with the socks on. Yes, you'll probably need to buy a new pair of socks but they're not a ripoff - and Peter Gunn sells his versions for less than Magnepan will charge you.

It could be your ribbons have torn ... given they've "been in storage for a while", did you store them with their metal ribbon-protector strips in place (if not, too sudden a movement while you were lifting them around could have broken them)? Have a close look at the backside of the ribbon cage when the socks are off (as this is open, so easier to inspect the ribbon). If the ribbon is broken, it will be easily visible.

Take the fuses out and check they're not blown. Then unscrew the screws holding the metal backplate in and examine the wires which connect to the fuse holder ... possibly they're corroded? If they're OK then you'll have to follow the wire circuit through the XO to each end of the ribbon, to see if there are any breaks.

Also check the tag at the top and bottom of the ribbon, to make sure there's not a break there.

Good luck!

Andy

PS: When you've fixed this ribbon problem ... THEN you'll have to start of the "tweaking" journey. Your old IIIas will astonish you with what they're capable of - mine certainly do! :-))
