Hi Andy,You do not have to touch a thing in the lower bass...i.e. your list of "high current amps, low damping factor amps, correct room positioning, low resistance speaker leads, rigid stands, active XOs etc. etc." to get awesome bass.
Any increase or improvement in midrange richness, power, and/or detail (and even treble) gives the illusion of powerful bass. As said by gymwear and the others, non-bass fundementals are what gives the impression of fast tight _ass :)
As you know I active biamp.....I recently changed cable from the HIGH pass amp (NOT the low pass) to the speaker.....the cable change effectively improved the low bass response several fold. I made no change itself to the low bass at all, but yet it sounds as if there is not only one, but two or three good subwoofers in the system now.
I have been throwing on organ music, etc. to relish in it.
Basil
