3.5Rs sound thin

Hi - I am new here, but certainly not new to Maggies. Problem is I just got an excellent deal on some used 3.5Rs; I brought 'em home plugged them into my PS Audio HCA-2 amp/C-J Pre and the sound was thin, lacking dynamics and the mids sounded sucked out - like a cheap radio.
I bought these to replace my heavily upgraded MGIIIs (Goertz Air Core Inductors, North Creek Capacitors) but there was no contest.
Could there be something wrong with these 3.5Rs?
