It is typically the ESL-57 treble panel which fails and requires rebuild.
However, I have noticed an intriguing pattern of damage on ESL-57 bass panels.
The front and rear stators on bass panels are held together by metal rivets.
These rivets pierce the diaphragm, and so have the same 6,000 volt charge as the diaphragm. On an ESL-57 which is thirty-plus years old and has been left charged, the charge on the projecting heads of these rivets seems to cause them to perish and to “electroplate†the surface of the stator around them. Eventually this contamination spreads enough to short-circuit the entire panel.
Once this occurs, it is virtually impossible to remedy. Is this a form of electro-plating, and is there an effective way to remove the contamination it causes?
