Re: Opinions on Forte Model 3 to power MMGs/1.6s?

The old Forte 3 was just a so so amp.
I lived in Sacramento back when, and heard many of them.
It wasn't the great sounding amp it's pure class A brother was, make no mistake!

Yes, it was designed by Nelson Pass, but so were Adcoms, and Nakamichi's.

The old Nakamichi's that used the Stasis designs of Nelson were just so so too.

Also, be CAREFUL with the old Forte stuff, some used IGBP Transistors, and you will play hell finding them anymore when they break.

IF you stay with the MMG's, or even the 1.6's, and are not into cosmetics, or what your audio buddies think, I suggest an Ashly FET 500 power amp.

These are older pro sound amps using the old can style Mosfets, and will do almost 500 WPC into 4 ohms.

They are a LITTLE too grainy for an MG 3a with the ribbon tweeter, but few amps aren't.

But, they absolutely shine on my SMGA's.
I mean they "take control" of a Magnepan, and make em jump.

The Ashly's can be found used for about 200 dollars, and are balanced.

If you are not balanced, simply get an RCA to Balanced connector.
These amps are ultra reliable, and still supported too.

Truly a "sleeper" for a low buck approach.

The Hafler 9800 Diablo is also a smooth amp with decent power, and so is a Luxman M 117, or a Moscode 600.

I JUST got an Adcom 585, but it is being modified and i haven't listened to it yet.
