I've been actively bi-amped for a couple of years now with my Magneplanar 1.6's. I've tried a few different combinations of amps. My active line-level crossover was built for me by Davey to match the stock Maggie X/O points. My question: who has found an ideal pair of amplifiers for this task?
I've tried a pair of identical amps (both 60wpc tube amps). I've tried solid state on the bottom and tube on the top. I liked my results best when I specialized with a different amp for each purpose (as long as they were carefully gain-matched). Most of my trials have been with tube-type amps, since that's my general preference. However, I've recently heard a pair of Maggies driven by Innersound amps that I thought were stunning (but with tubes in the preamp stage). I'm thinking now about solid state on the bass panels and tubes on the tweeters, but I'm open to all ideas at this point.
One idea was to go for one of the better multi-channel amps (such as Pass Labs X5 or Parasound A51) and assign one channel to each driver. I like the elegance of doing it all with one box. Anyone done this?
I'm looking for recommendations. Any takers?
Thanks!
Frank
