Hi Timbo,I don't think any of the Maggie owners here will have tried what you suggest as they sound better when the panels are set out from the side walls as well as forward a few feet from the front wall.
In my case, I have the middle of the bass panel about 1.6m from the front wall and about 1m in from the side walls (so the side of the panel is about 750mm away from the wall). Ribbons are on the inside and the panels are toed in so they are almost perpendicular to my ears.
I guess, yes putting them close to the side walls would give better bass but the famous Maggie "airiness" would suffer! :-((
