I agree.

I would rather take a tricked out 1.6 (modded crosses, great stands, no fuses) and a really good frontend/ amp combo over a pair of stock 3.6s and an amp that barely drives them.

Similiar to your experience, I had a 1.6 owner over who heard the tricked out MMGs, and he thought they sounded better than his stock 1.6s

WHile it sounds like you are making a statement about the 3 series and the ribbon and a 3 way, personally, I think it has more to do with all the mods you have done and the fact that it is easier to drive the smaller maggies. IE. I think that a completely modded 3.6 with a few good amps/ frontend behind it would out perform a stock 20.1 with the budget being equal.

Not exactly saying that the 3 way vs 2 way and quasi ribbon vs. ribbon issues aren't real, just that the modding and system matching account for the smaller tweaked out ones sounding better in the example you provided.
