The old ESS did not have good woofers, so there always was a compatability problem with the two. The new companies are working these problems out with good success by paying more attention to the crossovers and the quality of the bass speaker as one example.
The Orchid has worked out the problem. It is a two-way system but has three speakers. They are using an 8" Volt bass/midrange speaker crossing over to the Heil at 1.5 kHz. The 4" Fane speaker is used only to smooth things over in the transition from Heil to the bass/midrange Volt.
