I compared a very early prototype to the DAC1 last spring in the facility of a local high-end mastering engineer who bought a DAC1 based on the Internet buzz for that product. He wasn't impressed with what he got, in a cost-indifferent sense, compared to his multi-thousand dollar Pacific Microsonics professional digital converter. However, the early RAKK dac prototype actually held its own with and bettered in a few areas the PM professional unit to his ears. I agreed with his observations. The production RAKK dac is substantially better than that early prototype. The most noticeable difference was in the area of overall sonic signature. The DAC1 still had a sort of digital electronic haze about it, whereas the PM and RAKK dacs were more "analog-like".
