Well, as with many things this is a mixed bag. Putting the transformer closer to the tonearm minimizes the effect of noise pick-up in the cables to the preamp, but means that cable capacitance is now being driven by a higher impedance source. I would suspect that with a short length of normal cable, the latter is not a very significant issue.In any case, it is not beneficial to locate the transformer too close to a source of an AC magnetic field, like a turntable motor. So keep the transformers on the tonearm side.
