Balanced outputs do not have a center tap that is connected to ground. It's a common misconception, so don't feel embarrassed. If you want a thorough treatment of balanced signal transmission go to the Jensen Transformer website and read the relevant Application Notes and you will have a very good grounding (ha-ha!!)in signal transmission concepts. Phantom power does cloud the issue a bit, though, I admit.
